The UNC MJ-school offers four graduate programs:

  • The Ph.D. in Media and Communication in Chapel Hill prepares students to lead in the academy and industry. About three-quarters of graduates move directly to tenure-track faculty jobs. Nine Carolina students—more than from any other university—have earned the award for the nation’s top dissertation in the field.
  • The M.A. in Media and Communication in Chapel Hill offers specialized professional programs of study in strategic communication, visual communication and journalism. Theory and research students prepare for doctoral study and can pursue a J.D./M.A. dual degree with the UNC School of Law.
  • The online M.A. in Digital Communication equips working communicators for leadership roles with challenging courses designed for career-minded students’ busy schedules. It was named the top program of its kind in a 2019 national ranking, and a new GRE waiver makes applying easier for qualified professionals.
  • The online Certificate in Digital Communication is comprised of three courses and can be completed in as little as one year. Students take one course per semester—perfect for busy professionals—and earn credit that can later count toward the MJ-school’s online master’s degree.
